It's milkweed!

Asclepias syriaca, or milkweed, may be a weed but it's an important source of nectar for native bees and wasps. And monarch butterfly larvae chow down on this plant like nobody's business.

Colleen from Urban Harvest says milkweed comes up in the organic fields every year – and she's happy it does. They scatter seeds to promote its growth because besides attracting all sorts of beneficial bugs, milkweed is quite lovely when it blooms.

How to save the seed

You've probably seen these seeds floating on the wind, attached to their fluffy white parachutes. They do a good job of seeding themselves. But herbicides do take their toll. You can save seeds from the wild to bring home for your bee friendly garden, or scatter elsewhere that looks like it could use pollinator perches.

Harvest the seeds from ripe pods. You'll know when they're ready if you squeeze them and they easily crack open along the seam. You can also put loose elastics around the pods wait until they pop open on their own.

Check out this quick video to learn how to get all the seeds without the fluff:

Happy seed saving!
